Healthy eating with diabetes

Food is never just a source of energy and nutrients. A steaming bowl of soup can bring comfort on cold days, and sharing a family recipe is a way of connecting with our culture and community. Food is central to how many of us celebrate and socialise on a daily basis, and Type 2 diabetes doesn’t have to change that.

Experts agree that those with diabetes do not need to go on a permanent and restrictive diet. What you need to eat doesn’t have to differ too much from what’s recommended if you didn’t have diabetes!

Instead, the key to preventing and managing Type 2 diabetes is eating healthy, well-balanced and portion-controlled meals spread across the day, while also getting appropriate exercise. This helps keep blood sugar levels in check and also puts insulin to work more effectively.

Balanced meals that are nutritious and delicious

Able Foods has taken the guesswork out of healthy eating: Our team of dietitians, nutritionists and chefs have spent countless hours perfecting our Magic 8 Nutrition Guidelines, to ensure all our main meals are as healthy as they are delicious.

One of the best things about our guidelines is that they also comply with the Australian Dietary Guidelines¹, which Diabetes Australia recommends people with diabetes use to help make healthy food choices.

From Roast Lamb & Rosemary Gravy to Spaghetti Bolognese, all Able Foods’ main meals are perfectly portioned and calorie-controlled. This means they deliver the benefits of eating balanced amounts of carbohydrates, a good source of fibre, and controlled quantities of saturated fat and sugar without missing out on flavour. This is important for everyone, but it especially helps people with Type 2 diabetes keep their blood sugar and energy levels running smoothly.

Carbs–which includes the sugar found in many foods–have a big impact on our blood sugar levels, but they also play a very important role in keeping us healthy. They’re where a good chunk of our energy comes from, especially for our brains. So while we don’t need to do away with them completely, it’s still important for everyone to be aware of how much and what types we consume, particularly when living with Type 2 diabetes.

Choosing meals that are high in fibre and have a low glycemic index (or low GI) can help. Low GI meals² are those that are digested more slowly and so have a lower impact on our blood sugar levels.

Able Foods has you covered with main meals that are specifically designed to be nutritionally balanced. Every single one delivers at least 1.5 serves of veggies and 3 serves of food from the 5 food groups

We also control the sugar in each main meal to bring you dishes that are just as delicious as they are nutritious. Our Roast Chicken & Gravy, for instance, serves up potatoes, peas and carrots, which all come together to contribute to our daily nutrition and energy requirements, including from carbs.

On top of this, our main meals also have controlled amounts of saturated fat. As with any diet, it’s important to limit your intake of saturated fat, which is found in the likes of cream, butter and sweets. Too much of it can raise your high blood cholesterol levels and cause weight gain, which can make it harder to manage your blood glucose levels.

Of course, eating well is always easier with foods you know and like. Able Foods’ extensive menu includes traditional home-style meals like a range of roast, Classic Chicken Schnitzel and Lamb and Veggie Shepherd’s Pie, as well as curries, pastas and soups that guarantee you’ll never run out of new favourites to discover.

With Able Foods, you can enjoy mealtimes while being confident you’re taking care of yourself with every dish.
