Frequently Asked Questions

About the Soft & Easy menu

New meals will start to become available from Thursday, 30 July.

We’re excited to introduce Soft & Easy, our newly designed puréed and minced & moist range. It includes:

  • Moulded meals for a more appetising plate
  • Brand new soups and desserts
  • The same nutritionally considered, balanced meals you trust, with even more flavour
  • New sugarcane packaging that’s more sustainable and both microwave and oven-safe, giving you more ways to heat and eat

We are introducing eight new main meals at launch, with more to follow in coming months.

All Soft & Easy products are designed in line with the IDDSI framework for either ‘minced and moist’ and ‘pureed’ textures, all without compromising on flavour, health or convenience.

Always consult with your health practitioner to understand which IDDSI texture level is best for you.

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) Framework is an international standard for texture modified food and drink. It provides a common understanding for food textures and drink thicknesses that can be used by people of all ages, in all care settings, and across cultures.

The IDDSI Framework has 8 levels. For liquids, it ranges from 0 (thin, like water) to 4 (extremely thick, like a pudding). For food, it ranges from 3 (liquidised) to 7 (easy to chew and regular meals).

Each IDDSI level has specific descriptions and testing methods, including the diameter of a slice of food and how quickly liquid flows. For more detail about each of the levels, visit the IDDSI website.

Soft & Easy products are designed in line with the IDDSI framework for ‘minced and moist’ and ‘pureed’ textures.

IDDSI tests are intended to confirm the flow or texture of a particular food/drink product at the time of testing, to ensure they adhere to the labeled texture level.

Always consult with your health practitioner to understand which IDDSI texture level is best for you.

The new range of Soft & Easy main meals are slightly more expensive than the previous texture modified meals. Soft & Easy meals are moulded to make them look more appetising, whilst also ensuring the meals are safe and easy to swallow, which takes extra care to produce. Each meal is cooked, then carefully reformed into its familiar shape, so it still looks like the meal it’s meant to be. This process uses specialist equipment, smaller production runs, and ingredients chosen to hold their shape while still meeting nutritional needs. Meals are also produced to meet recognised texture and safety standards for people with swallowing difficulties. These extra steps are reflected in the price.

While we transition to our new menu, our current range of texture modified items will be available to order while stock lasts.

If you’d like support choosing meals that are the most similar to your old favourites, contact our friendly client support team on 1300 123 225 or [email protected]. We’re here to help.

The Soft & Easy moulded meals use plant-based starches and gums to keep their shape. These may include small amounts of potato, corn, tapioca, or wheat, and agar agar (from seaweed), xantham gum (from fermented sugar), and guar gum (from guar beans).

All these ingredients are widely used in food products and are safe to consume.

All Soft & Easy products are designed in line with the IDDSI framework for either ‘minced and moist’ and ‘pureed’ textures. Consult with your health practitioner to understand which IDDSI texture level is best for you.

If you have allergies, please check the meal information before consuming.

Proper heating is essential for moulded texture modified meals. Please always consult the heating guidelines found on the meal packaging.

Meal plans

If you have a standing meal plan, we’ll manage the transition for you wherever possible, swapping outgoing meals for a new meal that’s as similar as possible in cuisine type, protein and allergens. Your meal plan may start to see these changes from Thursday, 6 August. We’ll let you know by SMS each week which items are being removed and what’s replacing them.

No problem. Once you’ve been told about an upcoming change, you have until the next order cut-off (Wednesdays at 5pm Sydney time) to get in touch and choose something else instead.

Our money-back guarantee

The Money-Back Guarantee only applies to main meals. It does not apply to snacks, desserts, beverages, sides, Soft & Easy range products or any other item. See full terms and conditions.

Delivery

No. There are no changes to delivery days, drivers or how you’re notified about your order.

Packaging

We’re using a new sugarcane-based tray that’s designed to offer:

  • A lower environmental impact, made from renewable resources
  •  Biodegradable materials
  • Improved safety for hot foods

Approximately 90% of the tray’s weight comes from compostable sugarcane (bagasse), significantly reducing plastic use compared to traditional meal trays. The sealing film is made from CPET and should be disposed of in general waste. All meals can still be heated in both the oven and the microwave.

  • Compostable sugarcane-based trays
  • Clearer meal labelling
  • Improved presentation
  • Easier identification of meals in the freezer
  • Better consistency across the range
  • New ways to heat and eat: Our sugarcane packaging is both microwave and oven safe.

The tray is made from compostable sugarcane material but has a thin plastic lining. This lining ensures the tray is leak and grease resistant, provides structural strength, enables the meal to be heated correctly, and extends the shelf life.

If the lining is removed after the meal has been eaten, the tray can be placed in the green bin or composted at home. If the lining is not removed, the tray should go in general waste. The top film (CPET) must always be disposed of in general waste.

We’re working with our suppliers to continuously improve the environmental credentials of our meal trays.

Even with the lining, 90% of the tray’s weight is compostable sugarcane. This transition significantly reduces our overall plastic consumption and environmental impact compared to regular plastic meal trays.

Able Foods and TLC

Soft & Easy was developed by the team behind Tender Loving Cuisine, who have specialised in preparing meals for older Australians for many years. The logo reflects that heritage and expertise, giving you confidence that every Soft & Easy meal is made to the same trusted standards, however you order it, through Able Foods or TLC.

No. Able Foods and TLC will continue to operate as separate brands, each with its own menu, ordering process and support model. Both are part of the FP Ability group of companies, but they’re run independently.

Funding and pricing

Yes. Soft & Easy meals are available through Able Foods, and can be ordered using NDIS or Support at Home funding, subject to your individual plan. Our customer service team can help you understand your options.

Call us on 1300 123 225 or email [email protected].

Yes, some meal prices are changing. Our menu is priced individually by meal, from $2 co-pay for smaller meals, up to $3.50 for others, and many of our meals remain at $3 co-pay. Some standard menu items and main meals in the Soft & Easy range will move to a higher price point, reflecting the cost of ingredients and, for Soft & Easy, the specialist process involved in producing texture-modified meals. Exact pricing will be available on our website closer to launch. Printed copies of our menu with pricing will be included with meal deliveries from w/c 26 July.

Our menu is getting a refresh, but our mission remains the same.

We’re as committed as ever to supporting people with disability and older Australians. That means our friendly customer service team is still here to help you navigate using your Support at Home and NDIS funding to order with us.
