Who’s eligible for NDIS-funded meals?

Occasional need
If you have a degenerative or fluctuating condition (e.g. multiple sclerosis), ready-made meals may support you during periods of fatigue or reduced capacity.

With support worker assistance
When support worker help to cook meals isn’t realistic for every meal, a blended approach can offer better value across support budgets.

Ongoing need
Where cooking skills or capacity are unlikely to improve, meal delivery can be a sustainable, value-for-money support.

Frequently Asked Questions

NDIS Meal Funding

This is a very common question. NDIS support for food and meals works a little differently to what many people expect.

The NDIS does not pay for food itself, but it may fund the support required to prepare and deliver meals, where this relates to a participant’s disability and daily life needs.

In simple terms:

Food and ingredients are paid for by the participant

Meal preparation and delivery support may be funded by the NDIS

Able Foods follows this model by clearly separating food costs from support costs, so you only end up paying for the ingredients, while NDIS funding covers preparation and delivery.

No. The NDIS does not cover takeaway meals or fast food services.

Able Foods provides ready-made meals prepared specifically for NDIS participants, offering a compliant alternative that supports nutrition and convenience without relying on takeaway.

Meal preparation can be provided in different ways, depending on your NDIS plan and individual needs.

  1. A support worker cooking in your home. A support worker may assist with meal planning, cooking and skill-building.
  2. Prepared or ready-made meals delivered to you

Some participants access meals through a registered NDIS meal provider.

Yes, through meal delivery platforms where the food and ingredient component can be separately identified from the meal preparation and delivery components.

Able Foods is a registered NDIS meal provider, offering chef-prepared meals delivered directly to participants.

Yes, choice and control are core principles of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Able Foods offers a wide range of meal options to suit different tastes and dietary preferences, supporting participants’ nutrition needs and personal choice.

The cost of ingredients is considered an everyday living expense and is not funded by the NDIS. Able Foods makes this easy by separating food costs from NDIS-funded preparation and delivery.

There is no fixed number of meals set by the NDIS.

Able Foods can help explain how meal delivery may fit within your available funding and current plan.

Yes, if meal preparation and delivery continue to be reasonable and necessary for you.

Meal funding is reviewed at plan reviews and may continue where it helps you to pursue your goals and increase your independence.

The NDIS may fund the preparation and delivery of meals, not the food itself.

This can look like:

  • A support worker preparing meals at home (you pay for ingredients), or

  • A meal preparation and delivery service like Able Foods, where food costs are paid privately and preparation and delivery is covered.

What’s funded depends on your individual plan. Able Foods can help assess your eligibility or talk you through your options.

NDIS meal funding is intended to cover the support required to prepare and deliver meals, not the everyday cost of food or groceries.

Able Foods provides itemised invoices that separate ingredient costs from preparation and delivery to keep things simple and compliant.

According to the NDIS, you may decide to use your support flexibly in different ways and have meals prepared and delivered to you, if:

  • you are diagnosed with an infectious disease which means you need to isolate or reduce your contact with others.
  • the people who usually support you to prepare meals are unavailable for a short period of time – for example, if family members who help you go into hospital.
  • you have been recently discharged from hospital or are recovering from an illness and need temporary nutrition support while you arrange for help from support workers.
  • you have been unable to find someone else to help you prepare meals during these periods.

The NDIS may pay for the preparation and delivery component of meals, but not the cost of ingredients.

Able Foods clearly separates these costs to align with NDIS funding rules and easy co-payments.

Participants who have core support funding specified for meal preparation and delivery in their plan can use this support item to claim for meals prepared and delivered.

Participants who have funding for support workers to undertake shopping and meal preparation support may use this funding to claim meal preparation and delivery as an alternative for short periods in response to short-term disruptions.

No. Meal services often complement support worker help and skill-building rather than replacing them entirely.

Many participants use a combination of both, depending on their needs at different times.

If you’re unsure how meal preparation and delivery fit into your plan:

  • Review your NDIS plan for mention of meal preparation
  • Speak with your NDIS planner, Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator
  • Contact a registered NDIS meal provider for guidance

The Able Foods team is happy to talk through how NDIS meal funding works in practice and help you understand your next steps.
