Every May is a month of movement here at Able Foods. You’ll see us doing it all, from yoga and lunchtime zumba to plunging into the ice cold pools of Sydney beaches for an early morning swim.
This an annual ritual for our team as part of the Lend us Some Muscle campaign, which raises awareness and funds to find a cure for Friedreich Ataxia (FA).
What is Friedreich Ataxia?
FA is a progressive neuromuscular disorder that can lead to a loss of muscle coordination, vision impairment, and heart conditions, among other symptoms. While considered rare, it’s the most common form of hereditary ataxia (which means poor muscle control), and it affects about one in 30,000 people in Australia and New Zealand.
FA affects everybody differently. “Not every person will develop every symptom, and not every person will experience the same pattern of progression,” points out Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) US.
FA is close to our hearts here at Able Foods, as one of our longest standing colleagues, Ash, has FA. Outside of work, Ash is an FA ambassador, a generous resource for accessible venues, and an avid footy fan.
